Walk vs. Hike

I've been walking. Not running. Just walking.

A few weeks ago my knee reminded me why regular running hasn't worked for me in a long time. Just when I get back in a groove, some nagging part of my body shuts me down.

So....walking.

I like to move, but move quickly. It takes patience to walk. Even the dog leans forward, pulling (though he's trained not too), straining to pick up the pace. He looks back at me. Why aren't we jogging his face asks. "I can't," I say out loud to him and the pavement and the trees and anyone who will listen. He and I are both happier when we take to the trails and the mountains. There it's okay to slow down. He is off leash and so am I. My mind doesn't race on the trail. It's distracted by the landscape and sounds. It has a job to do. Watch out for rocks, snakes, bears. My brain is simultaneously soothed and stimulated in the woods. It might just be the best form of therapy.

This morning we walked. While the car was being worked on we hoofed it to a nearby neighborhood around a small lake and walked three miles. The exercise felt good, the fresh air felt good, the chill that has finally hit our mornings felt good. But being on pavement, walking past houses, listening for traffic...none of that calmed me. I came away from our walk even more wound up than when I started. Which means its settled. I can no longer walk. I'll just have to hike.

A Day In The Life

I really dig most of the content over at Simple Homeschool. They are currently running a “day in the life” series of homeschool mamas. I thought it would be fun and a bit interesting to post my own. So on a Thursday, I snapped pics like the paparazzi and wrote a lot of stuff down. It’s certainly not National Enquirer worthy. I like to think we are pretty typical, but what do I know. Here’s a peek into a normal day around here.

7:00am:  Yes, I am a late riser. I wish I had it in me to get up earlier but I just don’t. I quietly sneak to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. I say sneak because Miss Stella is in my bed. On my way down the hall I pass Cash, who is pretty much sleepwalking, on his way to my bed. Warren leaves for work.  I procure the precious coffee and kill an hour on the Internet. E-mail, blog reading, etc.
day16
8:30am: I decide we need to get a start on this day. I am pretty lenient about letting the kids sleep as much as they need to. These two are in bed by 8:30 every night and asleep by 9:30. If their bodies are telling them to sleep I let them sleep. I get them up and throw cereal and milk their direction as I head outdoors to feed the goats and chickens and let the dogs run.

9:00am-10:30am: Time for school. Math is first for both kids. Cash wanders off to my desk to do Teaching Textbooks on my laptop. Stella and I set up shop at the table in the dining/school room for Saxon. Stella powers through with only one bathroom break and two dog snuggle breaks. Cash beckons me for help twice.

day12day15

As Stella is drilling math facts and learning to tell time, I knit. I knit a lot during math, phonics, spelling, and when they read to me.

day13

As I wander past Cash’s room, I glance in and comment on what a mess it is. He blames it on the dog.

day14

10:30am- The kids take a break. Usually they are playing inside or outside. Today their break involves cleaning their rooms. For a twist they decide to clean each other’s rooms. Both rooms get picked up. I’m happy.

10:45am- Cash grabs a book and reads to me while I cook breakfast. This is the kids second meal of the day. They almost always have a small bowl of cereal when they wake, and then they eat again when I cook breakfast for Warren and I.

11:00am- Warren arrives home on a mid-day break. We eat and clean up our dishes.

11:30am- Stella needs to finish her grammar so we work on that. Cash grabs another easier book for independent reading and wanders off to find a cozy spot. Stella takes many bathroom breaks.

day10

12:00pm: Free time. The kids bundle up and head outside. We don’t often eat lunch due to our habit of having a late breakfast so they spend nearly an hour playing before quiet time on this particular day. Stella heads to the chickens and goats. Cash grabs his bow and arrows and practices. I step out after a bit to check on them and have to admonish them not to throw the chickens. Just because they can fly doesn’t mean you should chunk them.

day8day9

1:00pm: Quiet time. We take this very seriously. The kids go to their separate rooms for an hour. They can play, listen to audiobooks, draw or color. They usually take a snack and a drink and they are only allowed out of their room to use the bathroom. I use this time differently every day. Sometimes I do yoga, most of the time I catch up on chores, other times I just lay on my bed and read a book. Warren heads back to work.

2:00pm: Today is a History day as opposed to a Science day. We talk about Ancient Egypt some more. I read The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo and they do a narration on it. We go over the oceans for our memory work.

3:00pm: Art time and Warren comes home again. We make Artist Trading Cards to use as examples at our homeschool group gathering tomorrow. I pull up Pandora and play classical music while they work. Some days about this time, Warren and I go running. The kids go to his granny’s and mess around on the computer for 30-45 minutes while we are out pounding the pavement.

day6day7

4:00pm: Back outside to play and complete any chores that need to be done. Checking for eggs, watering animals, bringing in firewood. Stella terrorizes the chickens some more.

5:00pm: I start preparing dinner. Warren is immersed in his Rosetta Stone Lesson. Cash is off playing Legos, Stella is coloring mandalas.

day4day5

5:30pm: Dinner and dishes. We have steak bites, rice, and zoodles.  The kids eat their dinner faster than usual. The promise of dessert helps. Stella is on table cleanup, Cash loads the dishwasher. The dogs are on floor duty. Warren leaves to go back to work.

day3day1day2

6:30pm: Baths and warm pajamas! A few nights a week we have to go close one of our businesses, so we load up and drive to work.

8:00pm: Teeth brushing and final bed preparation. They sleep together by their own choice. I often wonder how long that will last. I read them a chapter out of whatever book we’re on. Right now its Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. The kids listen to an audiobook to fall asleep. This evening it was Charlotte’s Web. They’ve heard it a hundred times, but still ask for it. I’ve noticed Stella walks around muttering words in sets of three like the geese from the story. Wilbur-ilbur-ilbur. T double E double R double R…….

8:30pm-who knows when: Warren and I hang out. Sometimes it’s a movie or series. Other times we both retire to our respective computers.

This was a day when we had no afternoon activities. No piano, no soccer practices, no homeschool group. Our days mostly follow this routine with a few different things thrown for variety. And dogs. Don’t forget the dogs, providing comedic relief from the rigors of homeschooling everyday.

Another Ice Day

013015026016008019009022

In Southern Arkansas we don’t get a lot of snow days. We are much more likely to get ice. It drizzled rain and spit ice all day on Wednesday and far into the morning hours of Thursday. I snapped these photos when I went out to tend the animals. Surprisingly, it wasn’t all that cold.

Top to Bottom, Left to Right

a bit of leftover kale still standing in the garden; chicken wire coated in ice

icy grass; chicken feeding frenzy

breakfast club; peach branch coated in ice

Allie likes the goats, the goats don’t really like Allie; my other helper, Boss

Randomness

The other day I stumbled across Penelope Trunk.

Then I fell down an Internet rabbit hole for a few days.

Fascinating. And not one bit surprising she has Asperger's.

I've also been knitting. A lot.
I'm head over heels crazy about Wool And The Gang.

And running. A little. With my darling husband.

I also visited an iridologist and started an herb regimen.

I miss yoga. I was practicing regularly then all of the sudden I just quit. It makes me really happy so I should be doing it, right?

And yay! My favorite combination of holidays is coming up next week. Thanksgiving/My Birthday! It's a fun fun week.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love homeschooling? I'm going to morph into one of those people that believes it is the best and only way. But I already do that with everything I am into so its not really a big surprise.

I read this darling darling story to my 7 & 8 year old Literature class at our homeschool co-op this past Monday. As a project to accompany the book, I gave them each a small ball of yarn and taught them to finger knit. I was amazed and delighted how quickly and easily they picked it up and how much most of them enjoyed it. The boys especially!

One of those super amazing things about homeschooling is the complete and total freedom it affords you. Can you imagine not having your day revolve around school hours? Just for fun we spent Monday evening at a friends cabin in the middle of Shady. The next morning we took a wee stroll in our pajamas before loading ourselves and the dogs up and heading home to start school. Still in our pajamas. I snapped these as we were appreciating the beauty of the early morning.

The Evolution of Boss

Boss Dog went hiking the first weekend we got him.
At 10 weeks old and 15lbs he did more riding than hiking....

Sweet puppy baby doggy face. Muah smoochie awwww!

Hiking on his own with a very exuberant Stella girl.

Posing for the camera.

Everydoggy loves wine for Christmas.

First snow and he's nearly as big as Allie.

More hiking and the ears are beginning to stand up.

Another trip to the woods.

And yet another one, pausing to give me his big bad wolf impression.
"All the better to lick you with!"

And just a few weeks ago treating himself to a mud wrap.

Boss is now nearly 6 months old and getting close to 60lbs. He eats
like a horse, jumps like a kangaroo, and is the biggest lover I have ever met.

Awww Nuts!

Today is better than yesterday. And better than the day before that. And the day before that. So here are a few links to things I liked these last few days, ya know....the ones that were not so good.
But poor poor Boss dog! He is currently at the vet experiencing that procedure that responsible pet owners do to ensure no offspring come forth from their animals. Ouch!

******

I love Spoonfed!  She illustrates a most excellent point on standing up for what your kids put in their bodies, especially when faced with birthday parties!

Princess Maxima? Yeah, I like her. Maybe more than Kate, and I really really like Kate.

What are you eating for Superbowl? I am thinking about these nommy Paleo wings from Nom Nom Paleo!

It's almost Groundhog Day! If you can track down the song Punxatawney Phil by The Jimmies you should totally let your kids hear it. Instant classic!

Things Will Be Okay

I have some serious stuff floating around in my head lately.

I'm still dealing with death. It hits me at strange times.

I am now soley responsible for my kids education. That is a huge weight!

There is a family situation unfolding that is very serious and on my mind daily.

Yet for all the added noise I am noticing I am cheerful and calm. I am catching myself before I overreact (well, most of the time anyways). Warren and I are getting along wickedly well, although we have a few days out of the month where its better off that we don't talk. Doesn't everyone have those days?

I am immersed in schooling and housekeeping. Gladly getting out of bed each day to spend time with these small children. The oldest would correct me right now (as would the middle child) and point out that they are really not so small. But to me they are. We are learning this new daily norm together. Some days are terrific. Others not so much. Sugarbaby is learning to read and that right there is over the moon exciting to me. Even more so that I am the one teaching her. It's such a happy feeling!

But still I am serious.

Cash and I went on a hike with  the pups on last Saturday. He is the perfect hiking companion. Quiet and observing. He pauses only to look at something interesting. The dogs ran ahead while we walked along at our own pace. Slower than I would have liked to go, maybe a bit quicker than he would have liked to go. But it worked out for both of us.

It always does.

Snow

We only get snow like this once every few years.

So....we kind of get obsessed.

I have lived in muck boots and tights for the last few days. The animals still have to be taken care of. Snow or no snow.

The chickens cannot be coaxed out. Spoiled hens are eating in their coop for now.

The dogs are still in heaven. Begging to go out every chance they can.

Boss is only four months old and already its a snow smackdown!

I ventured out one final time to check on the girls and couldn't resist these fleeting colors of the setting sun. I feel for you folks that spend your whole Winter with this weather. It's beautiful....but man its cold.
