History This Week

At first glance it might seem a little strange to be studying the early Sumerians with a 5 and 7 year old. But that is really one of the things I love about the homeschool model we are using. The history cycles itself but in chronological order.

Last week was Mesopotamia. Learning the map of the Fertile Crescent and its rivers and seas. Locating Sumer. Reading about the shift from hunter gatherers to actual agricultural settlements. Completing history pockets and making ziggurats.

Stella and I worked on this cardboard model together. She was quite proud of her ziggurat.

Cash went another way and decided to construct his out of legos. Which is totally fine. He didn't quite follow the example but that's just Cash. He does things his own way. I'm glad he's got the freedom to do that.

In addition to all the reading, we watched this short video about Sumer. It's got a great point of view and narrator.

This week we are delving into the first writings. We've got plans to write notes using hieroglyphs.

Next week, Ancient Egypt and all the fun stuff that goes along with it!
