In Defense of Foodies

I am eagerly awaiting my ordered copy of Michael Pollan's,  In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto..

The tag line itself pulled me in, like any good tag line should.

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

I'm not sure how many of you are aware that my husband is now the owner of two grocery stores. I could say my husband and I now own two grocery stores, but honestly the idea feels too abstract for me to say that.

What I can say, is that for a self proclaimed foodie such as myself this is a dream come true and a nightmare all rolled into one. A dream of course, because now I have unlimited access to any and all foods my taste buds and heart desires. It is quite fun perusing the grocery catalog looking at all the things I could order. Gone are the days of meal planning and large shopping trips. Now I spend entire days surrounded by food (and imitations of food) and have the chance to plan out my breakfasts, lunches, and dinners by what looks the freshest and tastiest on any given afternoon.

On the other hand the temptation of non-foods is also surrounding me all day, every day. By non-foods I mean things such as Xtreme Pringles, anything made by Little Debbie or Hostess, etc. etc. etc. This is a bit of a nightmare. As is seeing what the actual American public spends its food dollars on. No people, Pop-Tarts are not food. Yes you can eat them. Yes I suppose you could survive off of them. But do they contain anything that grew in the ground or walked on all fours. I doubt it. You might have to dig pretty hard through the lengthy ingredient list to find something that qualifies as real food. I honestly could go on and on and on with this idea but you get the picture.

By no means am I condemning your food choices. Well, it probably sounds like I am. But its more of a I used to eat like that all the dang time and I honestly can't believe I did. I spend every day trying to change my eating habits for the better. It's a constant ongoing struggle against non-foods, convenience foods, and the like. Just the other night I ate one of those 500 calorie brownies from a package. And afterwards, I felt yuck. Completely yuck.

I think all I am really wanting to say is remember when we were always told to think think before you speak? Maybe we should think before we eat. Just food for thought, ya know.

  2. I call BS. I'm a big fan of the chocolate chip cookie dough pop-tarts. :)

Congrats on owning two stores! I'm sure that's a blessing and a struggle all at the same time.
