You Can Pick Your Friends, You Can Pick Your Nose, but...

You can't pick your family. But you can choose who you consider to be your family.

Now I suppose that is not always true. You choose your spouse and they become your family. You choose to have kids and although its a gamble as to what kind of person they turn out to be, they are your family.

I chose, some time ago, my immediate family members. My mother, my grandmother, and an uncle here and there. My mother added her significant other and his son and I'm happy to say she chose wisely so I gladly claim them as family. There are others though that I don't claim. I have my reasons, personal private very thought out and long decided upon serious reasons. And you know what? I am fine with that. It doesn't weigh on my thoughts, it doesn't keep me up at night. The only reason I am even bringing it up with you is because somewhere out there in the vast blogosphere someone is attempting to lay some guilt down on me by blogging about the situation. Fun stuff I tell ya.

When the hubby and I were first together, I was taken to the requisite family gatherings. Most often I was flabbergasted at the sheer number of people getting together because they were family. Especially on his mother's side. It never fails to this day that I tell someone who I am married too and they happen to be a cousin. It's funny to me but also comforting. Comforting to know that my children will have so many more family members to choose from than I did.

Speaking of people I would choose to not have as family members, let me tell you about the absolute display of stupidity I witnessed at the children's dentist last Friday. I had stopped in to make an appointment for the Cashman and was at the front desk speaking with the very sweet receptionist. All of a sudden an incredibly rude woman informs the receptionist that she has job interview in 10 minutes therefore she will be leaving her children here with her fiance'. The girl behind the desk kindly states their policy that all parents must remain with their children on site during an appointment. At that point the lady goes postal. She stomps around the waiting room ranting about how its not her fault and its their fault if she misses her interview and how they don't want to help her out and are just being little "bitches". Seriously her exact words. She said some other things too but in the best interest of keeping readers I won't repeat them. The funny thing was is there was a giant sign, big as day, stating the policy that parents remain on site. After the woman left, stating loudly that she would be taking her business elsewhere (I guess somewhere that they offer free babysitting in addition to dental services) the somewhat shaken girl behind the counter apologized to me and finished my paperwork. I shook my head and told her no apology necessary. You can't fix crazy and that woman was more than a few screws loose.

  2. I agree - just b/c some people are "family" doesn't mean they are good, respectable people.

And frankly, some, just shouldn't be around kids!
