In Defense of Foodies

I am eagerly awaiting my ordered copy of Michael Pollan's,  In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto..

The tag line itself pulled me in, like any good tag line should.

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

I'm not sure how many of you are aware that my husband is now the owner of two grocery stores. I could say my husband and I now own two grocery stores, but honestly the idea feels too abstract for me to say that.

What I can say, is that for a self proclaimed foodie such as myself this is a dream come true and a nightmare all rolled into one. A dream of course, because now I have unlimited access to any and all foods my taste buds and heart desires. It is quite fun perusing the grocery catalog looking at all the things I could order. Gone are the days of meal planning and large shopping trips. Now I spend entire days surrounded by food (and imitations of food) and have the chance to plan out my breakfasts, lunches, and dinners by what looks the freshest and tastiest on any given afternoon.

On the other hand the temptation of non-foods is also surrounding me all day, every day. By non-foods I mean things such as Xtreme Pringles, anything made by Little Debbie or Hostess, etc. etc. etc. This is a bit of a nightmare. As is seeing what the actual American public spends its food dollars on. No people, Pop-Tarts are not food. Yes you can eat them. Yes I suppose you could survive off of them. But do they contain anything that grew in the ground or walked on all fours. I doubt it. You might have to dig pretty hard through the lengthy ingredient list to find something that qualifies as real food. I honestly could go on and on and on with this idea but you get the picture.

By no means am I condemning your food choices. Well, it probably sounds like I am. But its more of a I used to eat like that all the dang time and I honestly can't believe I did. I spend every day trying to change my eating habits for the better. It's a constant ongoing struggle against non-foods, convenience foods, and the like. Just the other night I ate one of those 500 calorie brownies from a package. And afterwards, I felt yuck. Completely yuck.

I think all I am really wanting to say is remember when we were always told to think think before you speak? Maybe we should think before we eat. Just food for thought, ya know.

Not That I Would Ever Be On Death Row.

I'm cameraless. Being that the Nikon bit the dust, is taking a dirt nap, will no longer be with us anymore. Surely its not that bad. Nothing that a grand couldn't fix, except the little sucker keeps corrupting memory cards. Anyways...its humble replacement should be here tomorrow as long as the impending doom of the ice storm doesn't stop the UPS man. I do love the UPS man. Or men. As I have several. They deliver lots of packages to me. Oh yes...they do.

Being without proper photo fodder to blog about, I'm stealing an idea from another blog today. Now this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I'm on a strict "eat no more than 1200 calories a day" diet, because HEY! I'm down to 150lbs and that is totally worth all the self deprivation I'm putting myself through. I swear. Except ya know, losing weight is expensive. I need new clothes. Don't hate.

So here goes. What would you eat as your last meal on death row?
Here is my fantasy meal. Doesn't matter if I had hours to live or years. I would consume all of this without a morsel of shame.

Medium rare ribeye. Yummy juicy meaty goodness.

Loaded baked potato. Bacon and sour cream? Better than milk and honey.

Stuffed portobello mushroom. I prefer mine without tomatoes. I don't do tomatoes. Please include sausage and brie.

Dozen after dozen after dozen oysters. With lots of horseradish. And cold beer.

Fried crawfish tails. I could eat numerous baskets of these with that yummy roumalade dipping sauce from Cafe Rue Orleans.

Boiled shrimp. I will pretty much founder myself on boiled shrimp and crawfish.

Eggs Benedict. The BEST BREAKFAST EVER hands down. No arguments. I make a mean EB.

Cheesecake. If you don't like cheesecake I'm not sure we can be friends.

Chocolate cake. If you don't like chocolate cake there is something very very wrong with you.

And finally, chocolate milkshakes. Refer to the cheesecake and chocolate cake disclaimers.
And you dear readers?

Happy Oven Day!!!

Today was a special day at casa SugarBritches. We gots ourselves fire baby! Oh the possibilities. Cakes, muffins, breads, quiche, roasted chicken, casseroles, pot pies, chocolate pies, pecan pies! I could go on and on and on and I'd end up sounding like Bubba off of Forrest Gump. Shrimp grits, shrimp gumbo, shrimp etouffee, shrimp blah blah blah.

I recruited the help of the two boys and made them my personal sous chefs for our celebration cake. I found this colorful recipe at Omnomicon and thought it was perfect to break in the newest member of the family.

Here's Cashman doing his best to stir it up.

The pans of batter going into my brand new oven.

The baked goods coming out of my brand new oven. Psychedelic, huh?

I finally feel complete again. I've got a bake sale on Saturday to contribute too and I am gonna rock that thang! After that, Ada's baby shower, which will be an all chocolate affair. Brownies, cupcakes, ice cream cake, etc. There is no stopping me now. Watch out waistline. I kid. I kid. Kind of.
And just because this is my blog and I can do whatever I want, I shall end this post with pictures of Sugarbaby enjoying the 75 degree weather on this gorgeous day.

Tuesday's Gone...No Wait, It's Still Here

Okay, I'm back. I was just taking a few days to set up NLNS before resuming regular posting over here. But try and check in every few days over there because its worth it just to see if you learn anything new that could benefit you in ways you weren't even aware. I'm about to do a post on BPA, which is kind of old news, but there are still people who aren't even aware of it.

So what, it's Tuesday? I didn't accomplish a whole lot this weekend besides the daily grind of dishes, laundry, feed the mob, clean the mob, etc., etc. The Hubby did take care of some important chainsaw chores. I don't think he really thinks of it as work when he gets to use the chainsaw. I wouldn't either, but I'm scared to death of power tools that could sever a limb in one fell swoop.

I promise I'll come up with a more interesting post later. This one is going nowhere fast. It's a one way train, it's up @#%& creek without a paddle, (insert many more euphemisms here).

FD Update:
2 cups coffee
I'm not even going into yesterday or the day before. We'll just say chili cheese tater tots are not part of a well balanced diet.

Everyday is A Celebration

Last week I was PMSing, hardcore. Absolutely psycho crazy erratic emotional roller coaster. Hubby didn't want to touch me with a 10 foot pole. During one of my hormonal induced fits, he suggested that maybe we go to church. We haven't been to church in well over a year, since we moved back home and away from the one fellowship I have enjoyed in my 25 years. I'm pondering it and I will probably keep pondering it for a few Sundays. I'll let you know if I make it through the doors.

In reference to my post title, just wanted to share Cashman's enthusiasm with absolutely everything. He celebrates every single thing he does with a very loud, "Yay! I did it!" Drinks all his milk, "Yay! I did it!" Remembers to wipe his booty, "Yay! I did it!" Steals a toy from his big bro, "Yay! I did it!" It's inspiring how little it takes to make him happy and I think I need to take a cue from him.

Also this morning I got a call from the Monster's Kindergarten teacher. At first I panicked, then I wondered what in the heck he had done, but not to worry. He just sold the most raffle tickets on the boy's side so he gets to be the Kindergarten Representative at the Fall Festival tomorrow evening. He has to escort the girl representative during the awards. I hope he can keep it together, cause dudeman has a tendency to lock up in public. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Food Diary Update:
Lunch was a tuna sandwich (1/2 can) on whole wheat bread with one slice of provolone and lettuce.
I'm about to eat some grapes.

Suzanna Girl What's Up???

I am going to attempt to reply to all the comments I get in the comments section, so if you want to see if I am paying any attention to you fools at all, then check back.

Suzanna, I have missed you soooo much. I bet the kids are just all grown up already. Has Haders had her 1st b-day yet? You need a blog, just so I can keep up with you.

Food Diary Update:
2 cups coffee w/creamer
Egg white omelet w/spinach, mushrooms, feta cheese
1/2 ribeye (left over from last night, I love cold steak, plus i trimmed the fat off)
1/2 English muffin (Cashman ate the other half)
1 big glass of water
